kitten adopter information: human foods that are toxic to cats

In general, don't feed a cat or kitten food that's not suitable for people, including spoiled food, seeds or pits (they will chew them, and some fruit seeds contain serious toxins), potato eyes or green skin, or animal bones. Chicken bones in particular can splinter and injure a cat's digestive tract.

Here are a few foods that people eat regularly which are toxic to cats:

  • onion and garlic (be careful if you need to feed a kitten baby food - some meat baby foods contain onion or garlic, and this would be bad for your kitten)
  • avocado
  • grapes and raisins
  • chocolate, coffee, and tea
  • citrus
  • milk (not "toxic", but many cats are lactose-intolerant)
  • some mushrooms
  • tomato
  • yeast dough
